They're off! Steve Howard & Steve Endicott (both from the Atlanta area) started their trek from Springer Mountain in Georgia this morning.

That same day three other hikers -- Nathan Driskill, Andrew Raby and Matt Worley -- (all from Tennessee) left Springer Mountain bound for Maine.

I just received a call from Steve & Steve from the top of Blue Mountain just past the halfway point of the Georgia section of the trail. He reported that they had three days of good weather and then it was rainy yesterday. They have been hiking in shorts and t-shirts. He said that they had a good view of Brasstown Bald today, and that they should be at Unicoi by the end of the day.

Steve and Steve are about eight miles away from the North Carolina - Georgia border. They are planning on resting a day on Sunday while visiting with Steve Endicott's parents. Apparently Steve Howard's knee is sore on the downhills, and we all hope that this is a temporary problem that will be go away as his body gets used to the hiking.

As of Tuesday, Steve Endicott has decided that this was just not the right time to hike the AT for him. And for all of you that might think he is a pansy at this point, I don't remember you even THINKING about hiking the AT! Steve Howard is now hiking with three guys that Steve and Steve met on the trail. Their names are Andrew, Matt and Nathan.
